Rapper and Actor Will Smith and his Actress wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith have become Part owners of the Philadelphia 76ers. The NBA team was sold to a group of  ”9″  investors by Comcast-Spector, the team’s previous owner for a reported 280 million dollars. The investor group will be managed by billionaire and leveraged buyout specialist Joshua Harris. For Harris, who purchases distressed properties, the team was a natural acquisition considering the 76ers have not won a championship since 1983.

In a press conference on Tuesday morning announcing the 76ers’ new ownership, Harris commented,   ”It is an honor to become part of this storied franchise. We have a lot of work to do, but we have a rich history, a strong foundation and a bright future.”

Because of a lockout the first two weeks of the season have been canceled, giving the new owners an opportunity to make immediate changes. They lost no time on the first day, firing the general manager and making a pledge to cut ticket prices almost in half.

Having a packed arena and Philly native The Fresh Prince on board will surely breathe new life into the 76ers’ upcoming season.  Smith joins the ranks of other musicians who have become part-owners of NBA teams, including Jay-Z, who is co-owner of the New Jersey Nets; Usher, who is a stake holder of the Cleveland Cavaliers; and Nelly, who owns a piece of the Charlotte Bobcats. This trend could make for some serious halftime rap battles in the near future.
